Claude Design's standalone site closes December 14: how to migrate design systems, and what gets deleted

Anthropic is folding claude.ai/design into regular Claude. The standalone site stays up until December 14, 2026. Design systems can be migrated from the Artifacts page today, but chats, comments and public project links do not carry over. Here are the migration steps, the admin settings that block it, and the ZDR exception.

If your team built design systems or projects in the standalone Claude Design site at claude.ai/design, you have a deadline. Anthropic is folding that site into regular Claude, and it closes on December 14, 2026. After that date, claude.ai/design redirects to Claude, and anything left behind that wasn’t migrated or saved is deleted. (Sources: Claude Help Center migration guide, Anthropic announcement)

The change was announced on October 8 alongside the Claude Dashboards and Claude Motion betas, which is why it was easy to miss. Since September 16, Design has also worked inside every Claude conversation, and Anthropic says running two versions “slows down fixes for both.”

What moves, and what doesn’t

ItemWhat happens
Design systemsMigrate now from the Artifacts page; originals stay unchanged in the standalone site until it closes
ProjectsKeep working in the standalone site until it closes; the Artifacts page lists up to 60 of them. Anthropic says more details on moving projects are “coming soon”
Chats with ClaudeNot carried over; deleted after closure
Comments on projects and design systemsNot carried over; deleted after closure
Public links to standalone projectsStop working after closure

So the first job is simple. Save anything you need from chats and comments now.

How to migrate design systems

  1. Open the Artifacts page in Claude.
  2. Click “Migrate team design systems” in the “Claude Design lives here now” banner. If you closed the banner, it’s in the Claude Design menu at the top right.
  3. Click Migrate to confirm. Individual plans skip this step.
  4. Check the results. Each migrated system is listed with its owner and an “Open” link.

One run migrates every design system in the organization, including other people’s, and anyone who can use Claude Design can start it. Owners and sharing are kept. Empty systems and ones made from a built-in starter theme are skipped, even if you edited them.

There’s one sharing catch. Published design systems that aren’t private get shared with everyone in the organization after migration.

A migrated system can’t be edited on its own page yet. Editors see “Migrated from the standalone version. Ask Claude to make changes.”

When migration fails

Failures are listed under Couldn’t be migrated with a reason, such as “it’s too large.” To fix one, click “Fix in Claude Design Standalone”, run the check, fix the listed files, and repeat until it says “Nothing found in the way.” The guide suggests trimming the uploads folder first, since it often holds duplicates. Then run Migrate again. Systems you’ve already changed in Claude are skipped, so your edits there aren’t overwritten.

Admin settings that block it

Design in Claude depends on artifacts. Under Organization settings > Artifacts, artifacts must be on, along with Design systems, Design and Slides under Templates. Those three templates are on by default for Team plans and off for Enterprise plans. On Enterprise plans with custom roles, each role also needs the artifact permissions. Otherwise a system whose owner lacks them won’t migrate.

Zero data retention (ZDR) organizations can’t turn on artifacts at all, so they can’t migrate. They need to download projects one at a time. In the standalone site, go to Share > Project HTML (for decks it’s under “More formats and apps”), keep Project archive selected, and export a .zip. Anthropic says this is free and doesn’t count toward usage limits.

The rest of the October 8 release

Docs, Slides and Design came out of beta on every plan, including Free. Anthropic says people have made more than 45 million docs, decks and designs. Claude Dashboards, which builds live dashboards from Snowflake, BigQuery, Databricks, Redshift, ClickHouse or Salesforce, is in beta on paid plans. Claude Motion, which animates your own content as editable code and exports MP4, is in beta on Team and Enterprise. Enterprise admins have to turn both on in Organization settings > Artifacts.
