OpenAI doubles Work and Codex usage on Pro 100 and Pro 500, and cancels the Pro 200 cut
On October 29, 2026 OpenAI reversed the planned Pro 200 usage reduction and doubled the ChatGPT Work and Codex allowance on Pro 100 and Pro 500, with more usage for Business Premium too. Existing subscribers get it automatically. Here is who gets what, what did not change, and whether you should switch plans.
If you pay for ChatGPT Pro, you do not need to do anything: your ChatGPT Work and Codex allowance went up on October 29, 2026, automatically, and the Pro 200 cut that was due this week is canceled. Pro 100 and Pro 500 now include twice their previous Work and Codex allowance, and Pro 200 subscribers who were on the lower allowance were doubled to match everyone else. Do not cancel and resubscribe to “reset” anything; OpenAI says active subscribers already have the new allowance. (Source: OpenAI Help Center, About ChatGPT Pro tiers)
This reverses the change we covered on October 17 in Pro 200 drops to 10x Plus usage after October 29. That plan, announced at DevDay on September 29, would have cut Pro 200’s Work and Codex usage from 20x to 10x the Plus allowance (The Next Web). It will not happen.
Key facts:
- Pro 100 ($100) and Pro 500 ($500): twice the previous Work and Codex allowance, for new and existing subscribers, without waiting for renewal (OpenAI Help Center).
- Pro 200 ($200): the reduction announced in OpenAI’s September 29 email is canceled. If you already had the higher allowance, you keep it. If you were on the lower allowance, it doubled to the same level. New Pro 200 subscriptions also get the higher allowance. The price stays $200 a month.
- Business Premium: OpenAI’s ChatGPT Business release notes for October 29 are titled “More Work and Codex usage on Pro and Business Premium Plans.” Codex lead Thibault Sottiaux wrote on X that limits are doubling for “all Pro 100/200/500 tiers and Business Premium, effective today.” OpenAI’s Business limits page does not yet publish a new Premium number.
- Plus is unchanged. So is Ultrafast: it is still Pro 500 only.
What did not change
Chat limits are a separate bucket. Pro 100 and Pro 500 keep their current weekly GPT-6 Pro message limits in Chat. On Pro 200, the lower weekly limit now matches the higher one (OpenAI Help Center). Under the old plan that limit would have dropped from 200 to 100 messages a week (The Next Web).
Speed modes still use your allowance faster than Standard. Fast uses it at 2.5x the Standard rate. Ultrafast on GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol uses it at 8x, then charges purchased credits at 6x the Standard credit rate. OpenAI also says “a larger allowance does not guarantee twice as many completed tasks,” because usage depends on the model, context, reasoning, tools and speed mode.
Your dot keeps its own allowance for now. Sottiaux says OpenAI will “continue offering extended limits for dots for now” and that dot usage stays separate from your default usage. Tasks a dot hands off to Work or Codex still count against those limits, as our ChatGPT dots setup guide explains.
Should you change plans?
- On Pro 500 only for the extra allowance? Pro 100 and Pro 200 got bigger allowances too. If you don’t use Ultrafast, compare your real weekly usage before you renew. Open Settings → My Plan in ChatGPT to see the plan changes available to you.
- Downgraded from Pro 200 because of the cut? Pro 200 is open to new subscribers again, and new subscriptions get the higher allowance.
- Still hitting the limit? Check Settings → Usage in ChatGPT, or Usage & Billing in Codex, for your balance and credit options. Support cannot reset limits. Switching Codex to a lighter model also stretches the allowance; our GPT-6.1 Terra guide shows how to pick it.
One gotcha: if you scheduled a cancellation because of the cut, it does not undo itself. You keep access until the end of the billing period and can undo the cancellation before then. If you do let it lapse and resubscribe later, you get the same allowance as other Pro 200 subscribers.
